| TWEAK:- SLOW LOGON TO DOMAIN IN XP PRO |
| Monday, 18 August 2008 |
You may experience extremely long delays (up to 5 minutes) when logging into domains using Windows XP Pro. This is caused by the asyncronous loading of networking during the boot up process. This speeds up the login process in a stand-alone workstation by allowing the user to log in with cached logon credentials before the network is fully ready. To disable this "feature" and restore your domain logons to their normal speed, open the MMC and add the group policy snap-in. Under Computer Configuration-->Administrative Templates-->System-->Logon, change "Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon" to ENABLED. This can be fed to clients via a group policy from a Windows 2000 server by upgrading the standard policy template with the XP policy template. Since this is an XP only command, non-XP systems will ignore it in a domain distributed group policy.Labels: slow logon |

| TWEAK:- SPEEDING UP SHARE VIEWING |
|
When you connect to another computer with Windows XP, it checks for any Scheduled tasks on that computer - a fairly useless task, but one that can add up to 30 seconds of waiting on the other end - not good! Fortunately, it’s fairly easy to disable this process.
First, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/RemoteComputer/NameSpace in the Registry. Below that, there should be a key called {D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}. Just delete this, and after a restart, Windows will no longer check for scheduled tasks - major performance improvement!Labels: speeding up |

| TWEAK:- SYSTEM PAGES MEMORY |
|
I'm not 100% sure if this tweak will yield a great performance boost to the majority of users out there, but for me it seems to have shown very good results. By default, if you look in the [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management]key,
you'll see the 'SystemPages' DWORD Value set to something around 500 MB (more accurately, 524288 (KB), or something close to that value). Simply reduce the value to something around 128 MB (131072 KB) or 256 MB (262144 KB). Personally, I'm using the 128 MB setting, since my total RAM is 256 MB. It might help to experiment a little, since each machine will most likely yield better or worse results.Labels: memory, system pages memory |

| TWEAK:- PROBLEMS ENABLING DMA ON IDE DRIVES |
|
Are you experiencing jerky DivX;-) movies or does your mp3s click and pop on your new fancy Pentium IV 3Ghz+? Then the reason is probably that XP has set your IDE drives into PIO mode instead of DMA! Remedy? Enter the device manager by right clicking “my computer” and choosing “properties” and then “hardware”. Double click on the “IDE primary drive” and then “advanced settings”. There you can see the current setting for the master and the slave drives on the primary IDE channel. There you can select transfer mode. If it is set at “PIO only”, then select “DMA if available” instead and reboot! If the computer persists on having only PIO after reboot even though the hard drive is a flashing super-duper ATA133 and transfer mode set to “DMA if available”, then you have to do the following: Remove the primary device in the device manager and reboot! Voilà, now the harddrive should be running in DMA mode. Repeat on the secondary IDE channel if necessary. Now enjoy your smooth running DivX;-) and mp3s and the overall increased performance of your computer!Labels: ide drives |

| TWEAK:- OPTIMISE NTFS |
|
NTFS is a great filesystem, but its feature-set comes at a slight cost in performance. You can negate this a little with the following tips:
* By default NTFS will automatically update timestamps whenver a directory is traversed. This isn't a necessary feature, and it slows down large volumes.
Disable it by pointing regedit to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem and set 'DisableNTFSLastAccessUpdate' to 1.
* NTFS uses disparate master file control tables to store filesystem information about your drives. Over time these core MFT files grow and become fragmented, slowing down all accesses to the drive. By setting aside a little space, MFT's can grow without becoming fragmented. In the same key where you disabled the last access feature creat a new DWORD value called 'NtfsMftZoneReservation' and set it to 2.Labels: ntfs, optimise ntfs |

| TWEAK:- NETWORK INTERFACE CARD MEMORY |
|
1. Right Click on My Comp. 2. Then Properties 3. Device Manager or Hardware 4. View Resources by connection 5. Find the number IRQ of your NIC that uses the internet. (NIC meaning Network Interface Card). REMEMBER THAT NUMBER!!! 6. Then Click Run 7. Type Sysedit in the box and return 8. 4 or 5 boxes will appear, highlight the system.ini box 9. Under the [386enh] add the following exactly.. 10. Irq[n]=4096, where "[n]" is the number irq of your network card. 4096 is the recommended ram to reserve in kilobytes. 11. So it will look something like this Irq10=4096. 12. Save changes in the file and reboot for effect...
This tweak was from the help of www.speedguide.net. Some people with a cpu of over 500MHz had an increase of only up to 10%. Therefore it is a controversial tweak thats talked about. Hence, most likely they would be online gamers. Be sure NOT to overdue the amount of ram because it will have little or no effect at all. Most of you probably won't notice much effect anyway but it's worth a try. This tweak is assumingly okay for all Windows users. Afterward, go to www.dslreports.com to test your internet throughput and see what they recommend to change your RWIN. | TWEAK:- A WAY TO CLEAR PREFETCH ON SHUTDOWN |
|
In reading the other tweaks for "automatically" deleting the prefetch files (which, by the way, decreases your startup time drastically) and finding out that they were NOT AUTOMATIC at all, I was forced to find a truly automatic way to delete these files. The other tweaks weren't automatic because you had to run a file every time you wanted to do this. Also, running it once won't help because every time you run an app on your computer, it puts more files into the prefetch folder, so we needed something to delete the files when shutting down or restarting. Well, here it is:
1. create a new text file in the C:\ directory 2. type "del c:\windows\prefetch\*.* /q" (without he quotes) 3. save the file as "prefetch.bat" 4. From the Start menu, select "Run: 5. Type in "gpedit.msc" 6. In the window that appears, under the "computer configuration" heading, expand "windows settings" 7. under "windows settings", select "Scripts (Startup/Shutdown)" 8. double click "shutdown" from the right window 9. click "add" 10. click browse and locate your "prefetch.bat" file 11. click "open" 12. click "OK" 13. click apply or OK to finalize this process.
Now you are done. every time you shut down or restart your computer, it will run your shutdown script to delete the prefetch files. Labels: clear prefetch.prefetch |

| TWEAK:- BOOT XP FASTER |
|
First of all, this tweak only apply to those who only have one HDD on their primary IDE channel (nothing else on device 0 or 1) and a CD-ROM and/or DVD-ROM on the secondary IDE channel. Each time you boot Windows XP, there's an updated file called NTOSBOOT-*.pf who appears in your prefetch directory (%SystemRoot%\Prefetch) and there's no need to erease any other files as the new prefetch option in XP really improves loading time of installed programs. We only want WindowsXP to boot faster and not decrease its performance. Thanks to Rod Cahoon (for the prefetch automation process...with a minor change of mine) and Zeb for the IDE Channel tweak as those two tricks, coupled together with a little modification, result in an EXTREMELY fast bootup:
1. Open notepad.exe, type "del c:\windows\prefetch\ntosboot-*.* /q" (without the quotes) & save as "ntosboot.bat" in c:\ 2. From the Start menu, select "Run..." & type "gpedit.msc". 3. Double click "Windows Settings" under "Computer Configuration" and double click again on "Shutdown" in the right window. 4. In the new window, click "add", "Browse", locate your "ntosboot.bat" file & click "Open". 5. Click "OK", "Apply" & "OK" once again to exit. 6. From the Start menu, select "Run..." & type "devmgmt.msc". 7. Double click on "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" 8. Right click on "Primary IDE Channel" and select "Properties". 9. Select the "Advanced Settings" tab then on the device 0 or 1 that doesn't have 'device type' greyed out select 'none' instead of 'autodetect' & click "OK". 10. Right click on "Secondary IDE channel", select "Properties" and repeat step 9. 11. Reboot your computer.
WindowsXP should now boot REALLY faster.Labels: BOOTING, fast booting of xp |

| TWEAK:- DISABLE UNNECESSARY SERVICES TO FREE TEXT DOCUMENT |
|
Services are programs that run when the computer starts up and continue to run as they aid the operating system in functionality. There are many services that load and are not needed which take up memory space and CPU time. Disabling these services will free up system resources which will speed up your overall computer experience. I recommend that you sort through the list and read the descriptions to decide if you need that service depending on what you want to do with your computer. Remember, you can always turn the service back on if you find that you need it in the future. Below is the procedure to turn off a service.
- Click the start button.
- Select run from the bottom of the right column.
- Then type services.msc in the box and click ok.
- Once the services window has loaded we are ready to turn off unneeded services.
- For instructional purposes we are going to turn off the Portable Media Serial Number service.
- Find this service in the list and select it with the mouse.
- Right click and select Properties.
- Once the properties windows has loaded locate the
- Start up type drop down box and select disable.
- Then just click ok and the next time the computer starts the service will not be loaded.

| TWEAK:- DISABLING AUTOMATIC UPDATES PROPERLY |
|
A lot of people already know about Automatic Updates and how to disable them by selecting the appropriate option from within the Automatic Updates tab in My Computer. A lot of you might not realise this, but the Automatic Update service still runs even when you select to disable it here. To turn it off completely and for good do as follows: 1. Go into Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services. 2. Highlight the service called "Automatic Updates". You will know when you have the correct one because you will see a description about it telling you what it does. 3. Right click once highlighted and click stop to terminate the service. 4. Right click on it again and go to Properties. Half way down the first tab there is "Startup Type:" change this to disabled.
Congratulations. You have now disabled Automatic Updates service. Not only will this make certain service won't run, but by disabling it properly you are freeing up system resources as they won't be diverted to running a service that you don't use.Labels: automatic updates |

GETTING MORE PROCESSING POWER
"In the Run box, type "Rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks". This frees up any idle tasks running in the background so that Windows XP can devote its full attention to what you want it to do. For example playing graphic intensive games."While it does free up idle tasks, according to Microsoft, it can take up to 15 minutes to do so. You would not want to run this task before playing a game or using your machine as it will actually cause any tasks waiting for the system to become idle to be performed immediately.Labels: processing power |

| USE OF PREFETCH FOLDER IN XP |
|
PROBLEM:-What is Use of prefetch folder in Xp?I read some where that if we delete the contain in prefetch folder login & log-out process get boost it became fast. Is this true?
EXPLANATION:- Prefetch folder contains .pft files which contain the execution segment addresses of many recently and most commonly executed applications in the main memory and on Hard Drive as well for faster excess to those applications..nothing in Windows XP is without any purpose..that folder has a valid purpose and that is to speed up the execution of most commonly used applications..if you delete it,it may boot the computer faster only a bit as windows will not know any longer that which applications it should prefetch as there would be no hint available..and as a result, you'll have to pay the penalty here instead of windows startup...as the minimal windows booting time will be compensated by the slow initial execution of your commonly used applications...and even if you delete this folder,it will be recreated automatically in SP2 and SP3 systems as it is necessary for good performance..however you can delete it to save a couple of seconds while booting and then you'll have to wait for much longer than 2 seconds while starting your commonly used applications..I would suggest that let it remain as it is i.e.
